If mountain shooting had a spirit animal, it would not be large, heavy, or particularly interested in sitting still. It would be light on its feet, mildly tactical, and perfectly happy being dragged up a hillside while you question your life choices. Which neatly explains why the Snowpeak AP900 has become one of the most in-demand beginner PCP airguns out there.
This AAR members-only competition was proof of that. Thousands of entries. Yes, the stakes were modest at £2 a go or £10 for 20 entries, but whether this was sheer demand or just cheap optimism is a philosophical debate for another day. Either way, the interest was enormous.
Why the Snowpeak AP900 Fits the Mountain Shooting Brief
Snowpeak have a habit of squeezing a surprising amount of capability into sensible, no-nonsense rifles, and the AP900 is the lightweight, tactical end of that spectrum. It is aimed squarely at mobile shooters who value carrying ease, fast deployment, and the ability to shoot accurately from improvised positions.
At under 2 kg, with a folding stock that brings it down to roughly 600 mm for transport, it is the sort of rifle you can sling in a pack and forget about until you need it. The 118 cc air tank with an integrated regulator keeps shot-to-shot consistency respectable without turning the rifle into a boat anchor. The reinforced mammoth/M-series magazine system keeps feeding reliable, and the right-side lever makes quick follow-up shots simple and repeatable.
Add a 310 mm barrel with an integrated silencer, an upper Picatinny rail for optics, and M-LOK compatibility up front, and you have a rifle that can be configured for real-world field use rather than looking tactical for Instagram.
In short, it is designed so you can move further, react faster, and shoot without feeling like you brought a benchrest rifle to a hiking competition.
The Question That Caught a Few People Out
To win this one, we made the question a little bit cheeky.
A lot of media outlets have quoted the AP900 as weighing “under 2 kg”, which is true in the same way that saying the Alps are “quite hilly” is technically accurate but not very helpful.
Snowpeak originally stated at trade shows that the rifle would come in under 2000g. However, their official published weight on their own website is 1.6 kg.
Yes, once you add air and the integrated silencer, real-world scales tend to show anywhere between 1.6 kg and 1.9 kg. But competitions, much like motoring journalists, care about official figures.
So the correct answer was 1.6 kg.
Plenty of you spotted the red herring, got it right, and earned a place on what we will loosely call the Wheel of Destiny. Or the random name picker. Branding is a work in progress.
