I’m looking to buy my first Airgun and theres simply so much choice.
Watching YouTube reviews, reading manufacturers spiel and Airgun magazines the choice is mind boggling, especially for a newbie.
It doesn’t matter if you don’t use one, just what would you buy?
Even Andy has so many favourites.
You may say, go and join a local Airgun Club to try them or talk to the gunsmiths.
Well the local clubs I’ve tried are so secretive, one of which won’t even tell me their location, other than it’s in a quarry.
The other only let me use a Daystate with all the bells and whistles on it, the weight alone put me off buying one.
One thing I did find with the HW100K, I’ve been using JSB Diablo 177, 4.52, 8.4g as recommended by Redbeck when I bought it.
Even though my grouping was getting pretty good, at 20yds 5 shots in 20mm with 3 in the same hole almost, I decided to start weighing, cleaning and sizing the pellets out of fresh tins. It did make a slight improvement as I pushed the range to 25yds.
I had a mixture of various sample pack pellets from a local gun shop and I had a tin of similar Bisley, but nothing matched the JSB’s
I then bought as a trial off Fleabay, some QYS Olympic Match, which were slightly lighter.
Straight from the off, the Weirache loved them. Whether it was the weight or flattened end I’m not sure but they were excellent. So much so, I’ve ordered more of the same. Whilst I’m not competing, which is what they’re for, I just find the buzz of putting so many in a 25mm ring at 25yds.
Nice...
Strange that. 2021 will be my third year of membership - and although I've not been going very regularly, I've always found the powder burners to be a friendly bunch.
Having said that, when I first joined and went along, I was accompanied by one of their group – so maybe that made it easier for me.
I understand that they have priority on the range - so always wait for them to ok me to start.
I'm staggered you're having such a bad experience with what should be one of the best guns out there.
You may try writing to Air Gun World telling of your experience - I've learned that bad publicity tends to grab the attention of suppliers/manufacturers.
With regard to the FAC - have you just applied for club shooting?
I was under the impression that permissions were needed to justify the ticket.
I'm hoping to apply for a FAC - and having done a lot of reading, the FX Impact/Maverick would have been be my first choice.
Your experience does worry me - maybe I'll check out a Daystate Delta Wolf first.
Look forward to meeting up at the club when the lockdown ends.
Appears we're both members of the same club.
Can't believe your bad luck with the Impact.
I'd be tempted to contact FX if SGC aren't giving you the service.
Look forward to seeing the (new) gun when the club reopens.
Good luck.
I did manage to find a Rifle Club in the Macclesfield, Cheshire East area, in a quarry with a range up to 100 yards.
However, shooting <12 airguns, we are allowed to shoot in other parts of the quarry, when no one is working.
In did finally buy a Weihrauch HW100 KT Laminate .177 with a MTC Cobra scope.
I thought that was enough for me, especially at my age, but a friend I made said it wouldn’t be my last if I got hooked.
He was right, since I started this thread in August, I’ve now got a FX Impact MkII Carbine.177 with a MTC King Cobra scope. However, since I got it NEW in December ’20, with a fill gauge that didn’t work and scratches over the metalwor, it’s been with Parcelforce (who lost it), Sportsman Gun Centre who couldn’t find it and didn’t tell me.
Now it’s come back and straight out of the case (that came back with adhesive and scuff marks on) an X ring fell out … and I’ve still got to fire a pellet out of it
My green laminate FX Crown is a lovely rifle, staggering accurate. I have 0.22” and 0.177” barrels for it, so the calibre question doesn’t come up either, well less 0.20 and 0.25....
Another thought. Let everyone know where you're based - that way we can recommend a friendly club where you'll be made welcome.
Good luck
I'd look at buying a decent springer.
A springer and a scope, some pellets and you're off.
Even the most expensive springers aren't bank-breaking and you'll get the opportunity to get to grips with air gunning without spending a fortune on ancillary PCP equipment.
Look after it and you shouldn't have any problem moving it on if you need or want to upgrade.
Also there's less choice of springers – so it should be easier to find one – rather than wading through the multitude of PCP's.
I'd also invest in a good scope.
You can move that from gun to gun - so buy one that will last.
If you buy one suitable for a springer's kick it will easily cope with a PCP's low recoil.
Happy shooting.
You've got to narrow that down a bit. Even "money no object" there's no one gun that does it all. Are you a PCP or springer shooter? Pest control in close-quarters, or target shooting with plenty of elbow room for a longer rifle? Personal choice too, are you a fan of the traditional beech or walnut wood rifle, or do you prefer something modern and funky (a la EDgun Leishy 2)?
