Hi All, Only me!
I have searched the 'tinternet for an answer to this question, just as confused now as I was when i started this fact-finding mission.
I want to purchase a new scope, the scope in question is around £1100 in the UK (
Leupold VX-3i LRP 6.5-20x50mm (30mm) Side Focus MIL FFP but I can buy the same scope from a USA gun store for £788, with £62 shipping. MY question is m I permitted to import a rifle scope from the USA to the UK, without breaking any kind of import rules, or having HMRC or PC Plod on my door.
I am very confused by the whole thing

I get the point about sending it back if it goes faulty. One of my shooting party has just returned his Leupold back to Oregan as the scope has gone on the Fritz

Lying on the USA Custom's export form will get the sender a lengthy prison sentence and the loss of all of their firearms (felons can't own firearms LEGALLY).
Good old Customs & Excise will no doubt take a chunk as Michael says.
In the past, I ordered some Chinese kites from San Francisco, the bamboo and paper types. The duty was more than what I paid for the kites
I also do some scale modelling [1/24 car kits] and recently I bought some model parts from the US. I got a letter from the UK Customs, saying they wanted ££extra before they'd send it on to me. I wasn't prepared to get ripped off by the Gov, so got a refund.
Buyer Beware ..... or if you know someone in the US, get them to buy it, then send it as a present as it's 2nd hand [or so I understand]
Hi Mark,
You'll be looking at the price including shipping, VAT and customs duty of about £1050, + the Royal Mail handling fee of £8. I've got stung importing custom flashlights a few times by the various duties (VAT payable above £39, customs duties above £135). I'd say it's better value to purchase from a UK-based RFD, because you'll have the support if anything is amiss.
Cheers,
Mick
Hi Mark, for clarification my suggestion would be to contact Customs & Excise to be completely sure.
