I have not owned an air rifle since my teens and now in my 50's I've decided this needs remedying, so I am going to purchase a nice new rifle. After reading many reviews and seeing dozens and dozens of you tube tests. I have settled on a Weihrauch HW laminate; but which caliber? .177 or .22 the answer would appear to me to be .20 Mostly I will be just target shooting but I will also have the opportunity to shoot rabbit and rats. The choice of pellet is limited with .20 but all of the pellets available are of good quality and are widely available.
So what is the opinion of the forum, would I be making a ghastly and expensive mistake going .20 or is it a sensible option.
thank

Lovely looking gun the Regal. I am still waiting for the .177 nearly two weeks now...not that I am impatient or anything.
I'm waiting for a Regal .20 . Daystate emailed me back that it's about 5-6 weeks wait. Ordered via McAvoys gun shop. https://www.pelletperfect.co.uk/ do sample packs of assorted pellets in .20.
Went to the shop today and the waiting time for a .20 was anything up to 3 months ...so I ordered a .177 😁
I was talking with a friend and he said there are a load of designs for 3D printed, single shot magazines; you just add an o-ring to it.
His is currently trying to make honeycomb filters for scopes with his 3D printer but ending up with a few ‘birdsnests’. Technical term in the 3D printing world, I’m told.
😀
It will be and what they have in stock will be a factor too. I have bought a load of different pellets to play around with, I mean test. A standard shaped diablo works as well if not better than all the others, so give it a go. My local RFD has used HW100 KT for sale in 0.20"

Thanks for the reply, still undecided on wether to plump for a .20. Some things are still bothering me such as cleaning kits only seem to be made for .177 and .22 and a single shot mag from Weihrauch is £60 !
I shall go to my local gun shop and have a chat, bearing in mind that a shops main priority is making a sale.
PS. Probably worth saying, my method of getting around the problem was to buy the same rifle in 0.177” and 0.22”. Probably a more expensive ‘mistake’ than getting a 0.20”! 😀
No, not a mistake. As you say, the pellet choice is more limited but people like JS Ramsbottom will be able to supply something that works.
I would have said 0.177” for target shooting just for the flatter trajectory but it depends if you are sticking to just one distance. People will say any of the three calibres you mention for rabbits, and then say 0.22” or even 0.25” for rats. Professional pest control people all tend to use 0.177” though, however that might be for smaller holes in whatever is behind the pests!
I would say, get the rifle you want and the calibre doesn’t really matter. Just get to learn the gun, scope and pellet combination as well as you can. I would say the only downside of a 0.20” is that it might be harder to sell on at some stage, but if you plan to keep it forever that doesn’t matter either!
